Nagarkurnool (Mahbubnagar): At a time when a good number of qualified youth is looking for jobs, there are a number of teacher posts lying vacant in quite a lot of schools throughout the district. The shortage of teachers at the upper primary school in Papagal village of Tadoor mandal exemplifies this problem. In this school, there are only two teachers for the 116 students belonging to eight classes.

Till August 2015, the school has five teachers. However, three of them were transferred during the massive transfer that took place last year. Though six months’ time has been elapsed since then, new teachers were not appointed much to the chagrin of the students.

According to the Right to Education Act (RTE Act), this school must have four secondary grade teachers, one senior assistant and three vidya volunteers. Though the officials had appointed two vidya volunteers, they quit their jobs within no time to prepare for the forthcoming DSC and TET examinations.

Srilata, a student of Class VIII wondered what she could possibly write in the exams. Another eighth class student Ganesh said that every day we are going to school and returning home as the classes are not being taken. The parents, who are sending their children to government school out of financial compulsion, are now a worried lot and expressed anxiety over the future of their wards.

Papgal sarpanch Anil Reddy lamented that there was response from the officials despite him taking up the matter to their notice a number of times. The Papagal school is not an isolated case. Several schools in Tadoor mandal are facing a severe shortage of teachers. For instance, there are only three teachers for two hundred students in Antaram primary school.

As per the Act, there should be eight teachers in that school. In Polmur primary school, there are only two teachers for Class I to V one to five classes. Mandal Education Officer Chandrasekhar Reddy admitted that there was a severe shortage of teachers in the mandal and said he did whatever he could and it was up to the district authorities to respond and provide a solution.
