Centre flayed for becoming completely apathetic to the voice of students

New Delhi/Hyderabad: The AICC on Monday accused the BJP and the Prime Minister Narendra Modi of indulging in worst kind of fascism and autocratic behaviour for dubbing Rohith Vemula-the dalit scholar who committed suicide in the University of Hyderabad-a non-dalit. It also demanded 'Rohith Law' in the next Parliament session on the lines of Nirbhaya Act to end discrimination of dalits in the universities.

Pointing out that Rohith Vemula had to commit suicide because of the political intervention of the BJP Ministers at the behest of the ABVP, which led to his subsequent suspension along with a few other dalit students, Abhishek Singhvi, senior spokesperson of AICC, said the Centre had become completely apathetic to the voice of students.

It was not only anti-dalit and anti-poor, but also could not digest any protests or agitations against the same by any group. The attack on the students staging a protest in front of the RSS headquarters here by the Delhi police was yet another brutal reminder of the fascist regime's crimes, he said.

The government had abetted the suicide of Rohith Vemula on the one hand and on the other, it tried to deflect the attention from it by replacing the in charge VC too just ahead of Rahul Gandhi's visit to the campus the other day. It was shameful that a senior Cabinet Minister like Sushma Swaraj stood up to defend the criminal act of her colleagues by pronouncing Rohit Vemula a non-dalit.

The way the Modi government was using State machinery to crush dissent would not go down well with the youth of the country and cautioned Modi to exercise restraint as otherwise passions would ignite more and more everywhere. He demanded proper compensation for Rohith Vemula's family and an end to discrimination in universities and colleges by bringing Rohith Law in the next session of the Parliament.

Earlier, the Delhi police got mired in yet another controversy when its force including some outsiders- referred to as RSS/ABVP goons by the Opposition-violently attacked protesting dalit and progressive students staging a dharna in front of the RSS office.
