Hyderabad: The Telangana State Congress Committee has condemned MIM President Asaduddin Owaisi and his followers for attacking TPCC President N Uttam Kumar Reddy and Leader of Opposition in Legislative Council Mohammed Ali Shabbir at Mir Chowk police station on Tuesday.

Addressing a media conference at Gandhi Bhavan, Leader of Opposition K Jana Reddy and TPCC Working President Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka said the attack had exposed the failure on the part of the government to maintain law and order and in curbing MIM’s “goonda raj” in the Old City.

They said Asaduddin Owaisi himself had led a group of nearly 200 “goons” and roamed the Old City on bikes. They stopped the convoy of TPCC Chief at Mir Chowk Police Station when they were about to leave after securing release of Congress candidate Mohammed Ghouse.

They said police remained mute spectators when Asaduddin Owaisi and his men attacked the Congress leaders. Shabbir Ali and Uttam Kumar Reddy suffered minor injuries in the attack, he said.

Jana Reddy said that the MIM had rigged the election in the entire Old City while unleashing a reign of terror in the lanes and bylanes. He demanded that repolling be ordered in all 44 divisions and Asaduddin Owaisi be arrested.

He accused Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, Home Minister Naini Narasimha Reddy, DGP Anurag Sharma and Commissioner Mahender Reddy of failing to take action when the Congress leaders were attacked.

Vikramarka regretted that the State Election Commission and officials had failed to curb MIM rowdyism in the Old City despite the Congress making several representations to them.

Former MP M Anjan Kumar Yadav warned the MIM of retaliation if it continued to indulge in violence. Former PCC President Ponnala Lakshmaiah, MLC Farooq Hussain, former union minister T. Balram Naik, MLA T Rammohan Reddy and Youth Congress president Anil Kumar Yadav were also present.
