10 soldiers trapped as avalanche hits army post
Ten army personnel, including a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO), were on Wednesday trapped under a mass of snow after an avalanche hit a military post at Siachen Glacier in Jammu and Kashmir.

The avalanche hit a high altitude post situated at 19,000 feet in Northern Glacier sector in Ladakh region in wee hours of Wednesday morning, Defence PRO at Udhampur-based Northern Command Col SD Goswami said.
One JCO and 9 other ranks of Indian Army came under the avalanche, the PRO said. Army and IAF have launched rescue operation. "A massive rescue operation has been started by the army and the Air Force to trace the missing personnel who are feared buried under the avalanche," Goswami said.
On 3 January, four soldiers were killed in an avalanche in Siachen Glacier. "The incident occurred around 8.30 am yesterday (on 3 January). The names of the deceased are Havaldar Tsewang Nurbu, Havaldar Dorjay Gyaltsan, Rifleman Muhammad Yusuf and rifleman Jigmaid Chosdup," a defence official had said, adding that they were on the Southern Glacier on patrol duty when they were buried in the avalanche.
Siachen Glacier is the world's highest battlefield which the Indian Army guards despite an extremely hostile climate. The winter temperatures often drop to minus 50 degrees Celsius in the region.
