Steep fall in out of school students
The number of out-of-school children, who never got admitted to the school, has fallen steeply this year in the State of Telangana. While there were 46,931 out-of-school children last academic year, the number has come down this year to 28,566, about a 50 per cent fall. A recent survey conducted by the Directorate of School Education is the source of these estimations.

Among the districts, Hyderabad has got the highest number of out-of-school children i.e. 6891, followed by Mahbubnagar district with 6309 children. Warangal district has the lowest number of out-of-school children- 570- and followed by Nizamabad with 653.
The officials attributed this improvement to the special measures taken by the government to admit out-of-school children to the schools. In the present academic year, the government has admitted nearly 31,597 children to different schools including the government schools, residential schools and Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas.
Explaining the reasons for Hyderabad’s unwanted top place, the officials observed the constant migration of families to the city could have kept a good number of children out of the school. Likewise, Mahbubnagar district has got at least 8000 migrant families. To bring down this number further, the government intends to open day schools in the districts that have considerable number of migrant families.
In day schools, the children will be provided with breakfast, lunch and evening food. “These schools will be helpful for the migrant families to leave their wards at the schools which provide the both education and food. This system is working well in Maharashtra and we want to replicate it,” said a senior official. To this effect the government would be sending a proposal to the Ministry of Human Resource Development, he added.
