Adilabad: At a time parents are eager to send their children to corporate schools to get better education for them, people of two villages in Adilabad district took pledge to send their wards to only government schools and set up village committees for their development giving example to the people throughout the State of Telangana. They have even instructed the parents to send their wards only to government schools with a warning that they would be fined if they didnot obey.
People of Rajura village in Lokeswar mandal and Pendapalli village in Bhainsa mandal both in Adilabad district took a historical decision to promote government schools and send their children to only government schools. Not only that they even formed committees for the development of the schools in their villages.
The Grama Sabhas of both the villages have unanimously decided to develop the government schools and not to send their children to the private schools. After taking the decision they encountered a series of problems. They organised Grama Sabha again to solve the problems. Both the villages formed three committees in each village to overcome the problems.
The school maintenance committee would look after the day-to-day affairs of the school and supervise teaching and others. The School development committee would take care of appointment of teachers and payment of salaries to them. And it would also take up the responsibility of constructing additional classrooms, providing drinking water and maintenance of toilets. Third, Midday meal committee would provide nutritious food to the students.
In Rajura village alone, the government school, which was almost on the verge of closure with a meager 56 students, has now strength of 200 students. The villagers appointed five teachers paying salary ranging from Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000. They even appointed a physical education teacher to train the students in games and sports. An attender was also appointed. Village committees were formed for development. In Pendapalli of Bhainsa mandal, the strength of the students went up to 350 students from the earlier number of 70, according to village sarpanch Srinivas.
The villagers appointed nine teachers to overcome shortage of teachers. Village development committee (VDC) member Mahesh said that the VDC would bear the expenditure of salaries to the teachers. A mess has been set up in the school to provide midday meal to the students. One of the villagers, Rama Rao, said that no parent from their village is sending their children to the private schools.
Moreover, the students of those private schools are returning to the government schools. The people of both the villages appeal to the government to sanction funds to construct additional classrooms in their villages to overcome the problem.
