Hyderabad: In a move to make students industry ready and employable, the Telangana Commissionerate of Collegiate Education has introduced ‘Spoken Tutorial Project’ for government degree colleges. Developed by the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B) for Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), the project intends to provide opportunity to conduct software training for the students.

The project is part of ‘talk to a teacher activity’ of the national mission on education through information and communication technology launched by the MHRD. The Commissionerate of Collegiate Education has entered into a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the IIT-B and introduced it in 130 degree colleges.

The project would provide students and teacher hands through training on free open source software like Linux, Scilab, LaTex, PhP and MySQL, Java, C, C++, Libre Office etc. The course duration ranges between two and three months and depends on the selected course.

Speaking at the launch on Wednesday, Deputy Chief Minister and Education Minister Kadiyam Srihari said there was a need to learn fundamentals of information and communication technology. “Spoken tutorial is one where students can learn fundamentals at free of cost,” he said. After government colleges, the project would be implemented in the private degree colleges, he said.

Commissioner of Collegiate Education A Vani Prasad said the project was initiated on pilot basis in 15 colleges which benefited 889 students. She further said the courses were made available in 15 languages including Telugu. Students can choose their preferred language to learn the course, she added.

‘Spoken tutorial Project’ National Training Coordinator Shyama Iyer said that there were 30 to 40 courses made available with the project. “The students can download software and learn the course. A test will be conducted for the students and those who qualify in the examination will be given certificate from the IIT-B which will be useful in getting a job,” she added.
