Hyderabad: The Supreme Court Committee on improving road safety has directed the traffic police and regional transport authorities to implement the Motor Vehicles Act with a firm hand. The committee has directed both the States and Union Territories to take stern action against motorists who overspeed, drive in a drunken state, jump signals, use of mobile phones while driving and those overload goods and passengers.

It also has recommended suspension of driving licence (DL) of motorists for repeated violations. During a press conference on Friday, the Additional Commissioner (Traffic) Jitender and RTA (Hyderabad) Commissioner Sandeep Sultania told media that commuters driving without a valid driving licence would be prosecuted along with the owner of the vehicle for allowing an unauthorised person to drive the vehicle.

They could be prosecuted under section 180 and section 180 of Motor Vehicles Act and may even end up getting a prison sentence. Officials said that the special drive would begin from the last week of February 2016.

The process of suspending driving licences would be initiated against any individual found overspeeding, jumping signals, carrying overload of passengers or goods, drunken driving and using mobile phone while driving. “If any person is found to be driving a vehicle during the suspension period of driving license, they are liable for prosecution under section 182 of M V Act,” the officials said.

They said that in order to reduce vehicular pollution in Hyderabad all vehicle checking equipments would be brought online. The existing gas analysers in Hyderabad would be removed and replaced with four gas analyzers. “Making this process online will ensure that the data is authentic and also enables police to handle violations effectively. Tenders are being floated by the RTA for this and will be finalised shortly,” the RTA commissioner said.

As per the MV Act, in case of change in the address of the registered vehicle, RTA should be intimated. This can be done online also at www.transport.telangana.gov.in, the commissioner said. In 2015, as many as 50,000 cases were booked against the MV Act violators to ensure road safety. The drive on non-wearing of helmets would be intensified in future and the pillion riders are suggested to wear headgears for their safety.
