Hyderabad: The Telangana government’s flagship programme - 2BHK for poor - would have the third largest allocation after Irrigation and Water Grid (Mission Bagheeradha) in the 2016-17 budget. The government has already decided to allocate Rs 15,000 crore each to Irrigation and Water Grid from the next financial year.

Housing department on Tuesday finalised proposals for the construction of two lakh houses at a cost of Rs 14,664 crore. As Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao has already made a promise that one lakh houses would be built in the GHMC area alone this year, Rs 7,750 crore budget has been finalised for the purpose.

Construction of another one lakh houses would be taken up in all Assembly constituencies (other than Greater Hyderabad area) by allocating Rs 6,194 crore. At least 60,000 houses would be allotted to villages and the remaining 40,000 given to the poor in urban areas in districts.

Housing Minister A Indrakaran Reddy said that proposals were also prepared to construct 55,000 houses under centrally sponsored Indira Awas Yojana (IAY) scheme at the cost of Rs 527 crore and another 18,672 houses with Rs 193 crore under PM Awas Yojana scheme.

The Minister said the proposals would be forwarded to the Chief Minister after holding final round of meeting with the Housing officials of all districts in a week. From this year, no specific funds would be allocated for Indiramma housing scheme launched by the previous Congress government in the undivided State. All the pending bills will be cleared from the unused funds in the previous budget.

A special scheme is also planned to dispose off all apartments constructed under ‘Rajiv Swagruha’ scheme and lying idle in view of mounting interest burden on loans taken under the scheme from the banks.
