Hyderabad: Were the two alleged Maoists, Shruti and Vidyasagar Reddy, killed in an encounter in Tadwai mandal of Warangal district as claimed by the police or were they tortured first and then killed later as claimed by civil liberties organisations? This question was the central point in the hearing on the issue in the High Court at Hyderabad on Tuesday.

A division bench comprising of Acting Chief Justice Dilip B Bhosale and Justice P Naveen Rao was hearing a Public Interest Litigation petition by Chilaka Chandrasekhar, civil liberties activist, seeking CBI probe into the encounter in the forest area near Tadwai mandal.

Additional Advocate General Ramchander Rao placed before the bench that the the postmortem report stated emphatically that both Shruti and Vidyasagar Reddy had died due to bullet wounds only and that there were no other wounds or injuries on their bodies.

Counsel for the petitioner V Raghunath strongly contested the report and submitted that the petitioner and the family members of the deceased had noticed other injuries on the bodies after the postmortem and that they were not allowed to be present during postmortem. He expressed serious doubts over the postmortem conducted.

The Additional AG told the bench that the entire proceedings of the postmortem were videographed and it was available for cross-checking. The petitioner's counsel urged the court to send the videotape of the postmortem to AIIMS for expert examination as they had no faith on the agencies concerned in the State.

Although the Additional AG opposed this request, the bench directed the investigation officer to send the videotape to AIIMS. The bench also directed the AIIMS to seek expert opinion after examining the tapes and send the report within three weeks in a sealed cover. The case has been adjourned for three weeks.

Hearing on Roja suspension today Justice P V Sanjay Kumar of the High Court at Hyderabad on Tuesday adjourned to Wednesday for further hearing the case questioning the suspension of YSRCP MLA Roja from the Assembly for a period of one year.

The judge was dealing with a petition filed by Roja. The petitioner complained that Speaker K Siva Prasad Rao had suspended her for a period of one year contrary to the laws of the Assembly. Senior counsel D Prakash Reddy appearing for the petitioner pointed out that the action of the Speaker was contrary to Rule 340 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the AP Legislative Assembly.
