Medaram (Warangal): Home Minister Naini Narsimha Reddy has expressed the hope that the next Sammakka Saralamma Jatara will be celebrated as “National Festival.” The Minister along with his family members offered prayers at the Gaddelu. He offered 93 kg of jaggery equivalent to his weight. Jaggery, the main offering is called “Bangaram” in local parlance.

Speaking to the media on the occasion, the Home Minister said that efforts were being made to secure the status of “National Festival” for the Jatara. Narsimha Reddy said he had visited the place on the directions of the Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao to inspect the arrangements for the celebration.

The State government had taken the jatara in a prestigious manner and allotted more than Rs 150 crores for the arrangements. He expressed satisfaction over the arrangements made by the district administration and the police.

Inspector General of Police Naveen Chand, DIG B Malla Reddy, MP A Seetaram Naik accompanied the Home Minister. The district collector V Karuna presented a sapling to the Home Minister on behalf of the Forest Department as part the campaigning to grow trees to increase green cover.

A book titled “Goddess of Folk,” which was published by Kakatiya Heritage Trust, was released by Government Advisor B V Papa Rao in the presence of noted film director B Narsinga Rao, the KHT trustee Prof Panduranga Rao, TJAC Chairman Prof M Kodandaram and district Collector V Karuna.

The TJAC chairman Prof Kodandaram also offered prayers to the deities. He offered nearly 78 kg of jaggery to the deities. Meanwhile, the doctors, who were on special duty at Medaram, staged flash protests condemning alleged “excesses” by the police.
