Contrary to expectations of a cakewalk win, the world number nine suffered from mid-game blues before bouncing back to win with a 21-16, 12-21, 21-13 verdict.

His teammates who took to the courts had no such hiccups as each posted comfortable wins that drew the appreciation of chief national coach, Pullela Gopichand who watched the proceedings alongside Dronacharya SM Arif.

Ajay Jayaram made it 2-0 in the host’s favour while taking the second singles against Kean Yew Loh 21-11, 21-18. Taking cue the Manu Attri and Sumeeth Reddy combined well to defeat Yong Kai Terry Hee-Kean Hean Loh 21-15, 21-14 while Pranaav Jerry Chopra and Akshay Dewalkar downed Danny Bawa Chrisnanta and Hendra Wijaya 21-14, 21-13.

The inconsequential final singles match was won by World NO 27, HS Prannoy who had no trouble sending out Zin Rei Ryan NG 21-10, 21-12. The women draw was almost equally one-sided.

World No12 PV Sindhu polished-off Xiaoyu Liang at 21-17, 21-11 while PC Thulasi had an easy 21-16, 21-7 win over Hui Zhen Grace Chua. Jwala Gutta-Ashwini Ponnappa crushed Shinta Mulia Sari-Wei Han Tan 21-18, 21-16. Later, Ruthivika Shivani Gadde and the Sindhu-Sikki Reddy gave India 5-0 win.
