Hyderabad: In a landmark decision, the Telangana State government has decided to establish 120 new residential schools during the next academic year. These residential schools will come up as part of the TRS government’s flagship scheme, KG-to-PG free education programme.

A decision to this effect was taken during a review meeting convened by Deputy Chief Minister Kadiyam Srihari with the of the Education Department at Secretariat here on Wednesday. Each residential school would be constructed at a cost of Rs 4- 5 crore.

Accordingly, the department had sent budget proposals to the Finance Department for constructing these new state-of-the-art residential schools, Srihari told reporters after the meeting. The government also decided to observe academic year 2016-17 as "Education Year" with special emphasis on quality education to all.

On the National Assessment and Accreditation Council grading, he said there were about 126 government degree colleges and only 70 colleges had adequate facilities to go for in NAAC grade. “Some colleges require buildings, land, laboratories and computers. We have asked for sufficient budget to improve these colleges,” he said.

With Telangana having 66 per cent literacy, which is less than the national average of 73, the State government chalked out an action plan to increase the overall literacy rate. In order to strengthen Model Schools, Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas and government schools with compound walls, laboratories, CCTVs and biometric system, the Education Department had sought more allocations in the next budget.
