Hyderabad: Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao on Thursday asked Agriculture officials to introduce new technology for the benefit of farmers. The Chief Minister held a review meeting with officials of the Agriculture department as part of the Budget preparatory meetings with different departments.

Urging officials to ensure that there is no power cut, no shortage of seed and fertilizer, he asked them to have different strategies in place for excess rainfall and deficit rainfall. The Chief Minister wanted officials to encourage farmers to produce crops, which have demand across the country and also in global markets.

He asked them to work in coordination with the Marketing department to ensure that the farmer’s produce is not damaged due to rain in market yards. He asked officials to encourage farmers to go in for alternative crops and not stick only to cotton.

He said because of tax on cotton exports, the crop would not fetch good rate in future. Since there is demand for soyabeen, he wanted officials to encourage farmers to go in for soyabeen cultivation. Stating that funds for agriculture in the Budget were very low, he asked officials to look at the priorities and extract more funds from the Centre.

He stressed on the need to encourage farmers to take to mechanisation. Stating that soil in Telangana was suitable for cultivating chilly, turmeric and ginger, he asked the officials to identify such lands and encourage farmers to go in for those crops.

Stressing on the need to strengthen agriculture universities, he asked varsity officials to take up the responsibility of training field officials more often. “For this purpose, ipads would be given to agricultural officials,” he said.
