The Telangana Orthopaedic Surgeon's Association hosted its first annual conference, the three-day TOSACON 2016, which was inaugurated by MP Vishweshwar Reddy recently in Banjara Hills.

About 500 delegates from across the State were present including Sangita Reddy, Jt. Managing Director, Apollo Hospitals; TOSA's Chief Patron Dr Jairamchander Pingle; Dr KJ Reddy, President; Dr Raghav Dutt as organising Secretary; Dr Raghav Dutt as organising Secretary and Dr P Sudhir Kumar, Secretary.

Speaking at the occasion, Sangita Reddy said, “Indian doctors have excelled world over, but the core aspect we need to emphasise in India is life being precious and we need to ensure better emergency care.”

She said there is a huge gap in the skill capability of post graduate students and conferences like these can bridge the gap in big way, also greater emphasis should be laid on better PG training. “We have greater responsibility towards enhancing clinical and ethical standards,” she added.

Dr KJ Reddy said, “We need to have structured training programme which exposes PG students to all sub-specialties. In the MBBS curriculum Orthopaedics is part of Surgery, this is not doing justice to a vast and important specialty like orthopaedics, it needs to be delinked and taught as a separate subject, to train the undergraduate students in the basics of orthopaedic and skilled to handle basic trauma.”

Speaking on the occasion, Vishweshwar Reddy said that the State always gave special importance to orthopaedics for its ability to save patients in trauma right from the days of Nizam.

“The issues highlighted by the doctors like giving greater importance to Orthopaedics subject in MBBS and structured curriculum in PG, having infrastructure to provide immediate succor to highway accident patients and other issues raised will be taken up at the appropriate level in the government. We will have one of the first trauma centers in the Outer Ring Road shortly,” he said.
