Requesting citizens to register their pet dogs, Commissioner Janardhan Reddy said that the GHMC would co-ordinate with the Animal Husbandry department to bring the menace under control. He added that the authorities have been planning to seek help from private veterinary doctors to take up the birth control operations.

At present the National Animal Board is charging around Rs 100 for birth control operations. The GHMC is planning to take up the services of Government Veterinary Doctors to control dog menace in a more effective manner. The Veterinary wing of the GHMC has taken up the operations of the street dogs in all the private veterinary hospitals. “Around 25 Veterinary doctors are present in the GHMC limits.

Over the last two years about 1,51,000 dog operations have been taken up,” commissioner said.A pair of dogs (male & female) reproduces around 4000 puppies in a span of seven years. There is an urgent need to control these menace without killing them. As per records, around 90,000 dogs have been operated during the years 2014-15 and 60,000 dogs during 2015-16.

The GHMC has a fleet of around 17 vehicles with a staff of 102 to control dog menace in twin cities. The staff is entrusted with the operations of the dogs, post which the ears of the dogs will be mark to show that that it has been sterilised.
