Bhimavaram: It was after all Vijender Singh’s home State that clinched the honours in the All India Junior (Youth) men boxing championship that came to a grand finale at the Cosmopolitan Club premises here on Tuesday.

This was yet another indication that the country’s first professional boxer has been so very inspiring with his exploits in the ring that the next generation of pugilists from Haryana are raring to go on the international map.

On what was a very prolific day for the State, its boxers pocketed five gold medals while the other traditional powerhouse, Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) punched its way to two gold medals.

Boxer of the tournament Ashish, Sanjay, Ankush, Ankit and Sandeep did not just enter the final but knocked out their opponents with inspired punches and counter-punches. SSCB with two gold and four silver medals finished as the overall runner-up.

Later, P R Mohan, Chairman, Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh gave away the prizes. R Padma Raju, MLC, and members of Cosmopolitan Club and Organizing Committee graced the occasion.
