Sula Vineyards recently launched India’s first 100 per cent premium grape brandy Janus in Hyderabad at Taj Krishna. At the launch event, the company conducted a blind tasting session and placed three glasses of which two glasses contained whiskey and one had Janus. After the tasting session, surprisingly all the guests guessed Janus brandy as the aroma and taste of the 100 per cent grape brandy was better than the whiskey, and the liquor aficionados made no mistakes in guessing.
Yogesh Mathur, VP Manufacturing, Sula India Pvt Ltd, shared that they have named the brandy after ancient roman deity Janus, which has two faces to symbolise the French cognac and the Indian connection. The brandy is made with best Indian grapes making it an indigenous product. “We have selected four grape variants, which are grown in Nashik to make this 100 per cent grape brandy.
Other popular brandies in the market are neutral spirit based with two per cent brandy. Janus is India’s answer to French Cognac. We took one-and-a-half-years to come out with this product,” he added. This is the first that the Sula vineyard has forayed into the non-wine category. Yonael Bernard, the French Master blender has developed the recipe for Janus - the brandy is aged in oak barrels, which have been specially imported from France.
In India, especially in Telangana, not many people prefer to have brandy and with the foray of Janus, the company is hoping that this trend might change, especially since Janus makes a perfect base for various cocktails. Mixing Janus with ginger ale makes it very refreshing and tantalizing mix. Other must try is Janus with apple juice. However, the mixes have to be carefully chosen.
For example, we tried Janus with cranberry and the concoction was mediocre. Janus on the rocks is also a good option and in fact the right way to have it or the popular Indian way of having it with club soda too isn’t bad. Overall we can say that Janus is India’s answer to Cognac. It is available in two variants 750 ml and 180 ml and priced at Rs 2390 and Rs 618 respectively.
