Hyderabad: Bogus claims by beneficiaries of Public Distribution System (PDS) have led to delay in distribution of Food Security Cards in the State. Officials of the Civil Supplies Department are shocked to find at least three lakh names common in the list of to be beneficiaries both in Telangana State and Andhra Pradesh and nearly 20 lakh within Telangana State.

Officials are taking every care to ensure that eligible persons are not excluded during the drive to weed out fake beneficiaries. The food cards will replace ration cards after being seeding with Aadhaar card.

According to officials, the officials of the Civil Supplies Department have come across several instances where beneficiaries of PDS were found to have registered their names in two Telugu States. This has come to light during seeding of Aadhaar cards with that of beneficiaries’ details.

During the weeding out process, it was found that at least 1.25 lakh people were residents of Telangana State, while the remaining were from AP. “When we thought of removing these three lakh names from the list, it came to light that at least 1.25 lakh are living in Telangana State.

Cleaning up this kind of anomalies is taking time,” said a higher official of the department. During the seeding process, officials have come across 25 lakh bogus cards and a detailed enquiry was made.

There were instances where some of the households were found to have cards in two different districts within the State. “We are in the process of cleaning up the data. The moment we have clarity on the data, we will go ahead with the printing of cards. But first we wish to clear up the anomalies that have crept into the data,” added the official.

During the process, it was found that out of the 1.4 crore households, as many as 90 lakh families were below poverty line (BPL), but the national average is 60 per cent of the total population is declared as living below the poverty line.

The Civil Supplies Department is in the process of weeding out ineligible beneficiaries by identifying households whose income levels are more than Rs 2 lakh a year and also those who are in government service.
