Hyderabad: The Communist Party of India (CPI) national council secretary, K Narayana questioned Telangana government’s right to suspend the MLAs who obstruct the Governor’s speech in the Legislative Assembly during the Budget session.

He was responding to the Assembly Rules Committee’s recent decision to suspend the MLAs for one year in case they obstruct Governor’s speech in the House.

  • Speaker, Governor deserve no respect as they have been encouraging defections
  • Govt has no moral right to suspend MLAs for one year in case of their obstruction to Governor’s speech

Speaking to the media here on Tuesday, Narayana questioned how the Speaker, who remained silent over defections, now suggesting to the members to respect the Governor, who also has been maintaining tactical silence on this issue.

“Is it correct on the part of the Speaker, who was not taking any action on defecting MLAs, to suspend the MLAs in case they obstructed the Governor’s speech”, he wondered. Recalling the incident of obstruction of the Governor’s speech by the then MLA and present Legislative Affairs Minister T Harish Rao, Narayana said such situations would not arise if the House runs in a proper way.

He also found fault with the BJP for expressing its objections during the Rules Committee meeting and said the party-led Maharashtra government suspended the MLAs for two years for obstructing the Governor speech and they could not preach different standards here.

The CPI leader also alleged that the TRS and TDP were encouraging defections. He pointed out that the TRS is more vigorous on defections as it has been honouring the defected MLAs by offering plum party posts as well as minister posts.

Unfortunately, the Governor, Election Commission, the Speaker have been playing the mute spectators and not initiating any action in this regard, he observed.

He said nobody would have the right to criticise the Governor and the Speaker if they had initiated action against the defected MLAs. The decision of Assembly Rules Committee was ridiculous at this juncture, he opined.
