Hyderabad: In a major development, the Telangana government has taken a key decision to illuminate all 25 municipalities in the State with LED (Light Emitting Diode) bulbs in 100 days. With the use of latest technology, these bulbs are made energy efficient in lighting. LED is a semiconductor device that converts electricity into light.

The aim of the programme is to provide more light by consuming less power that will finally reduce power bills. At a high level meeting held on Tuesday, IT Minister KT Rama Rao, Energy Minister G Jagadish Reddy, Housing Minister A Indrakaran Reddy and officials of power sector held a discussion with ESSL, a Central government subsidiary, at the Chief Minister’s camp office, to supply LED bulbs at reduced prices.

Rama Rao asked the ESSL officials to supply bulbs at reduced prices. As many as 12 lakh LED bulbs will illuminate 12 lakh households in the 25 municipalities. Rama Rao said that soon other municipalities would get the facility and asked the officials to prepare a plan of action to extend it to village panchayats.

The street lights would be replaced with LED bulbs in the second phase, he said adding that the government would consider to offer these bulbs on subsidy price in the third phase. Jagadish Reddy said the aim of the programme was to save energy to supply 9 watts capacity LED bulbs for major gram panchayats and the energy officials had taken the job of fixing them.

Stating that their aim was to provide LED bulbs to 90 lakh households in the State, Jagadish Reddy said that Medak, Nalgonda and Nizamabad districts would soon get this facility. The government would bear the expenditure to supply two such LED bulbs to every household and Energy department would benefit in the form of energy saved in the process, Jagadish Reddy said.
