New Delhi: TRS MP K Kavitha here on Tuesday sought encouragement to women for their ‘social, economical and political uplift’ while taking part in a debate in the Lok Sabha on the occasion of International Women’s Day.

Pointing out that women had been suppressed politically all the while in the history, she said even Mahatma Gandhi could not include one women in his committee formed to supervise the Dandi March during the freedom struggle. Stalwarts like Sarojini Naidu had to protest seeking their inclusion as they were taking an equal part in the freedom struggle and all related agitations.

All political parties needed to keep in mind that a woman who took full load and burden of the family was equally powerful and must be encouraged, she asserted. Kavitha said women in powerful positions had a better understanding of the society and the issues involved in it and added that Sonia Gandhi, as the president of AICC, could understand the agony of Telangana and its people and had accorded a separate statehood to Telangana for which she would always be thankful.

She asked Speaker Sumitra Mahajan too to adopt a pro-women stand and help them come to positions of power. She congratulated her for holding a two-day women legislators conference which was attended by the President, the Vice-President and the Prime Minister.

The conference was beneficial to all participants and it made them confident that they could carry the spirit to the grass-root levels with renewed vigour. All the participants were fired up with new zeal and interest to tackle women’s problems head on after the conference, she added.

Earlier, during the question hour, Kavitha sought to know what were the compromises India made to sign the Paris Accord to which 55 countries had not signed till date. Referring to a statement by Minister for Environment Prakash during an interview earlier that India had to make compromises, she asked whether India was doing any climate financing.

She also sought to know the commitment of India on coal charges. The Minister replied that no country had signed the accord because the process of signing would begun only on April 22 at the UN Headquarters this year. As for charging the coal on par with the developed countries at $ 6 per tonne, India would also do the same, provided the developed nations fulfilled their $100 billion commitment to the cause.
