The gold merchants across the city joined their national counterparts in the ongoing indefinite hunger strike demanding rollback of excise duty on jewellers and staged a dharna at Mayur Kushal Complex in Abids on Wednesday. Hundreds of merchants from the Telangana Jewellers Association, Hitec City Jewellers Association, Twin Cities Jewellers Association and all associations under the All India Gems and Jewellers Federation participated in the strike.

Speaking on the occasion, the joint secretary of Hitec City Jewellery Manufactures Association, Avinsash Gupta, said that they participated at the All Associations meeting organised in Mumbai, wherein they had discussed that the government has many times, expressed concern over sale of bullion trade, which results in increase in gold imports and also encourages Current Account Deficit (CAD) issue.

“On this concern, all jewellers had proactively and voluntarily decided to stop selling bullion to consumers in the market by shutting down their shops,” he said. Mahender Kumar Tayal, convener said, “There are more than 8,000 jewellery and gems merchants covering in Telangana districts of which 3,000 are from twin cities in the GHMC limits.

We have been meeting government officials, bureaucrats and have been giving them our representation, highlighting the foreseeable plight of jewelers, manufacturers and artisans, following imposition of Excise Duty.” “Our protest will continue till the Government takes cognizance of our views and acts favourably,” he added.
