Government hospitals too are now working on par with corporate hospitals. “The liver transplant done on Sharif, a native of Kadapa is proof enough that transplantation surgeries are happening at government hospitals as well,” said Telangana Health Minister C Laxma Reddy here on Wednesday.

The minister visited Osmania General Hospital (OGH) to check on the condition of two patients. It is for the first time in the history of the hospital that two transplantations (liver and kidney) were performed on the same day. The transplantations were performed on Sunday.

The transplants were possible due to the donation of vital organs of a 33-year-old native of Khammam who was declared brain dead at NIMS Hospital. The family members gave consent to the donation which helped give life to four patients. The heart and kidney were donated to NIMS which helped a girl and a boy and the liver and kidney helped two people; Ramesh and Mahesh an M Tech student.

Laxma Reddy said that the cost of transplantation runs into Rs 30- 40 lakh, the beneficiaries at OGH did not have to pay anything.
