Styling a living room can be one of the most important aspect for your home as it is usually the first room any guest would enter and you do need to make a lasting impression on your guest. A home speaks a lot about an individual’s personal choice and personality, however, there are a few Do’s and Don’ts one should always keep in mind to create the best space that not only pleases the eye but is warm, welcoming and attracts positivity.

There are a few cardinal rules that might have come to your mind after you experienced having done the wrong thing for your living space. It is never too late to amend your cozy home, let us guide you with some of our tips:

Don’t ever use white decor as an option if you have kids and pets at home. No matter how attractive a gold and white or a cream and peach combination might look in a home store or a home magazine, it is really hard to maintain the spotless whites and creams if children spill drinks or a little puppy rubs his paws.

Very often people make the choice of having whites as an option for sofas and carpets or even drapes and that can be disastrous as it can be gruelling to check your child each time he/she wishes to jump on the sofa with shoes on. It is best that you refrain from such shades knowing you can’t be Hitler at home, making rules and waiting for pets and kids to break them.

Don’t forget to arrange your living room in a manner that you can accommodate at least five people. No matter how small or tiny a living room might be, there are always ways and means to make room for some seating. Be a bean bag for casual seating or a high back chair with an ottoman style table. Choose wisely while you buy your home furniture, you would hate yourself later, if you see your guests searching for seats and waiting for the other one to get up so that can jump on the chair.

Do use a vibrant and bright colour to bring alive a small space. No one suggests that you paint each wall a different colour however, one bright wall will add drama to the entire set up and probably a mirror will complete the whole look. A mirror gives the illusion of a bigger space and are ideal options to hang on a coloured wall.

Do find an inspiration before setting up a theme for your living room. Nothing can be worse than having a haphazard living space, it will eventually give an opinion of an unsettled mind. Your home can show inspirations taken from your last trip you took with the family or even a certain colour you like.

It is easy to sit back and think of the things you like the most and pick out a few that you can incorporate in a theme. A passion for cameras is one such theme that can make a really nice living space inspired by the traditional and modern camera shapes and sizes. Even a simple hobby of collecting stamps can be modified into an amazing work of art for your living room.

Don’t be afraid to put an eyecatching centerpiece that makes a statement for the entire room. Be it a vase or a huge figurine, depending on the size of the room make exceptions and go with what your heart likes the most. Very often we do see large vases with stunning flower decorations right in the middle of the drawing room, it adds beauty and opulence. One should not refrain from going a little Bollywood at times. Just make sure you do not invest in cheap and low quality figurines and vases, they do speak a lot about an individual’s taste and selection.

Do test the colours you want to paint on the walls. Many colours look extremely stunning on a brochure, however, they can turn horrific when painted on the walls of your home. You do not have to check a colour by painting an entire wall, you can easily pick up small paint cans of the colours you like and paint a big patch on the walls where you picture them.

A 3x3 ft square will give you the right idea whether to go in for the colour or not. It is very important that you trust your instincts while you decorate your home and make a note that whatever you buy or set up in your living room, it should have a little touch of your personality.
