The Basti Vikas Manch (BVM), a youth service organisation conducted an awareness rally at Telugu Talli Junction, Anna Nagar, Rasoolpura and Tirumalgherry on the occasion of World Water Day on Monday. The organisation promoted the Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) management to people living in slums in the city limits.

Aliya Khatoon, adviser, BVM said, “Our organisation is actively working towards enabling the slum dwellers on demanding their rights, with an essence of responsibility and resolving their issues. Although the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) and now the Goal six of Sustainable Development goals (SDGs) are weighing on the accessibility of water, sanitation and hygiene rights of every citizen, but the reality is that we are nowhere near the touching line of it.”

“We are a member country to the UNO and it had agreed to provide water, sanitation and best hygiene to our people. The government proudly announces schemes related to water accessibility by providing 20 hours of water supply to every individual household; however, the fact of the matter is today people of slums receive drinking water once in 10 days only for an hour.”

Every year the World Water Day is observed and the demand accessibility of water as per the WHO definition of water user is asserted. “Every citizen should get 10 liters of drinking water within 10 minutes of reach. But, today in the heart of the city, there are slums like Bholakpur, Addagutta,

Prakash Nagar, Pattigadda, Rasoolpura, Anna Nagar and Tirumulgherry that are receiving insufficient water supply at a range of once in 10 days. We demand that sufficient water supply to all the slums of the city should start immediately and the garbage from the areas should be collected on a regular basis,” she added.
