Twelve year old Nagoji Usha has been unable to survive on solid food and is surviving on milk since birth. What worries her parents is that Usha is restless most of the time and wanders away if let to herself. For a major part of the day, Usha is tied to a plastic chair as she has a tendency to become violent and wanders off from her house in Uppuguda to other areas without knowing her way back home.

I do not want any financial aid all I want from the government is the girl gets proper treatment in a rehabilitation centre so that she can lead a dignified life. Two previous Chief Ministers promised but nothing has come out of it. I have faith in the present Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao - N Ramesh, father of Usha

“In the last two years on three occasions we brought her back from the nearby police stations after she was picked up by the police. Passerbys mostly children beat and tease her if we let her sit outside the house. They think she is mad,” says Nagoji Ramesh her father. What is worse she can only recognise her parents.

The parents have consulted doctors of Niloufer Hospital, Gandhi Hospital, National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and several private hospitals but the doctors have been unable to diagnose her problem. While some say it could be Autism others feel it is Rett syndrome. Ramesh says, “The girl behaves well when she is accompanied by her mother to drop her younger sister to school. This shows that the girl only needs proper rehabilitation.”

Ramesh works as a waiter in a hotel in the Old City and has spent Rs 2-3 lakh till date. Every day the girl needs 3-4 litres of milk. Without a definitive diagnosis, several centres for Autism and mentally challenged centres refused to take the child. The doctors of different hospitals including Niloufer Hospital wrote in the child’s medical records her IQ of 50.

Doctors said that the girl gets fits in the brain. Ramesh says that he does not want money but good treatment for his child. The doctors that The Hans India spoke to said that it could be Rett Syndrome, a neuro-development disorder of the brain caused by genetic mutation. Rett syndrome occurrence rate is 1 in 10,000. Many a time Rett syndrome is mistakenly diagnosed as Autism. Another problem the Nagoji family faces is the owners want them to vacate the house. In the last three years the family has had to shift numerous times.
