Groundwater levels have dipped drastically in the city. According to latest data by the groundwater department, Asifnagar and Khairatabad were affected the most among eleven mandals for which levels were monitored. In Asifnagar, the levels depleted by 4 metres and in Khairatabad by 2 metres. According to officials, the uncontrolled drilling of borewells and mushrooming buildings is the cause for the plummet in groundwater levels.

In Marredpally and Sanjeevreddy Nagar, two areas known for plummeting groundwater levels showed a marginal increase. There is an increase of 1 metre in the case of the former and 0.30 m in Sanjeevreddy Nagar. Officials at the groundwater department say that there is no need to ring alarm bells as difference in the groundwater levels in comparison to last year is only 18 cms.

N Raji Reddy, deputy director, groundwater department says, “Contrary to popular belief, Hyderabad received normal rainfall. The overall depletion of groundwater keeps fluctuating due to several reasons.”There are 16 locations from where rainfall data is collected in Hyderabad and 11 locations to collect groundwater level data through piezometers.

The average depth to groundwater level in Hyderabad recorded in March, 2015 stood at 10.72 and in March, 2016 it is 10.54. Groundwater department officials say that if rainwater harvesting is taken up by colonies the situation would improve in the coming years.
