Though it is Rajani another elephant that is well-known and is the cynosure of all eyes as it is taken out for all major religious processions in the city, Asha too has cockled the hearts of visitors with its amicable nature since 1976 the year it was brought to Hyderabad from Tappakadu Elephant Farm in Chennai.

As per the tradition at the zoo of celebrating the birthdays of all animals, Asha’s birthday was celebrated by cutting a cake and a few lucky visitors, especially children were made to take part in the party. V V L Subhadra Devi who recently took charge as the curator served sugarcane and bananas to the elephant. M A Gaffar, Junior Veterinary Officer, NZP, Sirisha, Veterinary Asst.Surgeon, H M Hanifulla, PRO/ZEO, M Sandeep, wildlife biologist and mahouts took part in the birthday party.
