Heritage activists in the city are throwing all their might for a fitting tribute to the founder of Hyderabad. Thanks to the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, the Qutub Shahi tombs are getting restored to its past glory. “However, there is no memorial for Quli Qutub Shah where people can assemble and reflect on the founder,” said Mohammed Safiullah, historian and heritage activist. The trust is approaching the Telangana government for building a memorial.

The Deccan Heritage Trust is planning to mark the 450th birth anniversary of Mohammad Quli Qutub Shah with a series of events including talks, seminars, heritage tours and an international symposium in November. “The contribution of Quli Qutub Shah is immense, but the younger generation is unaware. If one does not know one’s past, one cannot move ahead. He was a secular person and also an accomplished poet,” said P Anuradha Reddy.

Apart from events, the Trust is also proposing the Central government to release a stamp and a coin in honour of the founder of the city. Hyderabad was established by Quli Qutub Shah in 1591 and the city remained under the Qutub Shahi dynasty for 31 years. His reign is considered as progressive as many developmental measures were taken. He was a scholar of Arabic, Persian and wrote poetry even in Telugu language.
