The second National Conference on Pulmonary Diseases was held at Hotel Trident in Madhapur. The conference was conducted by the first deputy manager of Pulmonary and Critical Care Specialist of South India and had dignitaries speak on respiratory diseases like asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD), pneumonia and tuberculosis (TB) as emerging health problems in the region.

Recent trends show that instances of chronic respiratory diseases are on the rise in key cities of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh like in Hyderabad, Warangal, Vijayawada and neighbouring districts of Guntur and West Godavari. The conference pointed out that respiratory diseases are no longer restricted to the elderly, but are now being detected even in younger age groups.

It cited a report by the World Health Organisation (WHO) that said deaths due to lung diseases in India are on the rise accounting for 11 per cent of the total life loss. As many as 150 in every one lakh died of one form of lung disease or the other giving India the dubious distinction of ranking first in lung disease deaths in the world.

It was concluded that in view of the increasing environmental pollution and rapid industrialisation there is an increased incidence of respiratory diseases in the twin cities.
