City-based software engineer, Rajesh Verma (23) has got a new lease of life after undergoing Cellular Therapy for Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy (FSHD) at StemRx Hospital in Mumbai. The disease is an autosomal condition that is dominantly inherited and caused by deletion of a repetitive element on chromosome. It mainly affects males and is caused by a faulty dystrophin gene.

The pelvis and legs are usually affected first, causing difficulty in walking. For Rajesh, the weakness in shoulder and arm was coupled with an excruciating pain in the lower back and knee regions, preventing him from carrying out daily chores.Recollecting bodily complications for the past five years, Rajesh sad, “It all started with weakness in my right shoulder. I was unable to lift my right arm upwards.

The pain gradually progressed over the years and by the time I could understand the seriousness, the pain was troubling me almost every day and more importantly, my mobility got slower and slower.” “On the patient’s first visit, we suggested him to undergo complete clinical, hematological and radiological assessment. Based on the assessments, a treatment protocol was made which involved two to three sessions of stem cell therapy over a period of four months.

The treatment plan was modified based on the patient’s assessments during the follow-up visits,” explained Dr Pradeep Mahajan of StemRx Hospital. Dr Mahajan, added, “Within the first week of cellular therapy, Rajesh could get relief from lower back and knee pain.

Subsequently, the patient also showed improvement in range of movement and reduction in intensity of weakness. Followed by series of sessions, Rajesh was able to lift his right arm to an appreciable extent and was also able to touch his shoulder backwards, which he was unable to do prior to the therapy.”
