Video games have always given us a chance to be an action hero, lead our favourite cricket team, or to shot that perfect goal; it has given us a world of escapism. However, its realm is not only restricted to leisure and has become a profession for many.Considered to be one of the fastest growing markets in the world, eSports is now making its foray into Indian market.
Anand Khemani, co-founder of e-xpress Interactive Software Pvt Ltd says “eSports is still a new concept for many people in India. In developed countries it is very well received and is considered as a professional sport”“It is only from the last five years that there has been a foundation for eSports. We are seeing a substantial growth in this area. To bring young audience more closely to this segment, we have been organising weekly tournaments at ‘Games The Shop’, which is our retail specialist arm.
More and more gamers are now participating in the championship league and competitions to not play casually, but professionally,” he adds.Talking about the market in Telangana and AP, he says, “Both states have a large market for gaming. When we organised the national finals for Pro Evolution Soccer (PES) 2016 in Mumbai, we had two finalists for the tournament who came from Hyderabad. This passion of gamers itself explicates that eSports is the next big thing in the industry.”
“Many brands in the business like graphic cards, gaming peripherals, gaming laptops, Internet broadband providers, gaming console making companies are now supporting eSports immensely. This elevation will take eSports to all new level in India in the next few years,” he adds.
How is the gaming industry as a career option? Khemani says, “As any other industry, growth creates more career opportunities. Having said that, there are development studios in India, which are doing well. Both e-xpress and ‘Games The Shop’ give plenty of opportunities to gamers who want to make this their career option.”
Commenting on the rise of women players in the conventionally “boys club” sector, Khemani says, “Yes, it is still a boys club. But, that doesn’t mean there are no female gamers. Fact of the matter, as eSports will grow in India; we will see a growth in the number of female gamers, too. That is the scenario internationally as well; there are lot of successful female eSports teams who are as good as if not better than their male counterparts.”
