A forty four year-old patient who had a complete block due to blotting of blood which prevents from conducting surgeries approached Prof Cherian who decided to conduct caval switch operation instead of the portal vein and the cava was used that would bring blood to the new liver.

Doctors at Care Hospital said that it was the first time that a liver transplant on a patient with such a condition where a majority of the blood flow that comes from the portal vein is blocked was performed successfully. “It gives hope to patients suffering with such a problem,” said Prof Cherian.

The six member surgical team conducted the surgery for close to 14 hours. Usually liver transplants are done in seven hours.
