The city on Wednesday, witnessed two major fire accidents in Ziyaguda and Jeedimetla where property worth several lakhs was gutted even before the fire tenders could arrive at the spot. In Ziyaguda, 24 poor families were left homeless, with all their belongings turned to ashes.

The poor dwellings with at least 15 shanties were gutted in Ziyaguda Kamela in Karwan constituency, when someone lit the fire to burn garbage early in the morning. The fire accidentally caught the nearby dwellings. It is a general practice by locals to burn garbage on the banks, but on Wednesday when most of the dwellers left for work the accident took place.

Most of the dwellers living in the shanties are rag pickers and garbage collectors who work in the morning hours. In the evening, MRO Rajendranagar, V Chandrashekar visited the spot and assessed the damage. After speaking to the affected families, he distributed Rs 6000 and rice for each of the 24 families.

He also ordered enquiry into the accident, which took place early in the morning. Earlier during the day, Karwan MLA Kausar Mohiuddin, TRS leader T Jeevan Singh and other leaders visited the place.

While some of them had also borrowed money for buying an auto under GHMC’s scheme for garbage collection, some poor dwellers were making arrangements for sending off their daughter in marriage.

The ornaments, gold and bridal clothing were also gutted in the tragic fire accident. The accident has thrown lives of most of the dwellers out of gear, as they have lost all their belongings like Aadhar card, voter ID and even documents, besides their savings and gold.

In another fire accident, which took place in the morning hours at a godown of Eureka Forbes in Jeedimetla, property worth more than 10 lakhs was gutted. Even as the staff of the company arrived during the morning, they found smoke and tried to control it with fire extinguishers.

They immediately called for fire tenders, while the fire spread to entire godown turning the huge cache of products to smoke. According to the eye-witnesses, the cause of fire accident was short-circuiting.

The material including Aquaguards water purifiers, vaccum cleaners, air purifiers known as aeroguard were completely burned. It took more than 6 hours to control the fire with the help of four fire tenders.
