A sloth bear aged five managed to escape from its enclosure at the Nehru Zoological Park (NZP) by making itself free from the narrow passage of the mesh.

The incident happened around 10 pm on Monday. The on duty security guard heard some sound and saw that the animal was missing. He reported the incident to the zoo officials, veterinary team and animal keeper, who tracked the bear and tranquilised it.

The sloth bear was returned to its enclosure and it regained consciousness after 30 minutes. The animal is active and has been taking food as per routine.

It has a small wound due to squeezing herself out of the mesh and is being treated. “There is no scope of any worries about her health,” informed Dr M A Hakeem, the zoo veterinarian.
