Maybe and may be have difference in their usage though it may not surprising to come across the expression of its usage in the wrong way. Many writers use the word (maybe: probably, perhaps) and the verbal phrase (may be: possible) carefully to point out the difference. And there is also difference between May Day and mayday!
Maybe and may be have difference in their usage though it may not surprising to come across the expression of its usage in the wrong way. Many writers use the word (maybe: probably, perhaps) and the verbal phrase (may be: possible) carefully to point out the difference. And there is also difference between May Day and mayday!
May as a verb is used to express possibility, expressing permission, wish, and permission. Other phrases formed by may are: be that as it may, may as well, that is as may be, may well be. ‘Be that as it may’ means despite the fact that it may be so.
‘May as well’ means might as well. ‘That is as may be’ means that may or may not be so. Difference between may and can: they are used to express permission. In formal context, may is used over can. Because can also indicates to someone’s capability:
Can I do that? Physically and mentally capable of doing that.
May I do that? Am I allowed to do that.
‘May well be’ refers to something that is little more than a guess, more than likely.
“Books may well be the only true magic.” –Alice Hoffman
May Day (1 May) is the international day of workers (but globalization has made it almost irrelevant unless a socialist or communist remembers); a festival of dancing.
May Day was celebrated in 1918 as the International Solidarity Day of workers in the former USSR. After the disintegration of the USSR and rebirth of Russia, it is known as Spring & Labour Day.
Very few countries celebrate May Day as the day of tribute to workers, labourers, and labour force. “The government and unions walk together as we journeyed from Third World to First, and no other country in the world has such a strong relationship between the government and the unions and interests.” –Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Hsien Loong’s May Day Rally Speech on 1 May 2015
But mayday in lowercase ‘m’ refers to the international radio distress signal used by aircrafts and ships. It comes from the French word m’aidez meaning ‘help me’.
Maying functions as a noun and adjectivemeaning participating in May Day festivities.
Mayflower is the flower that blooms in the month of May such as the evergreen shrub Epigaearepens.
Mayfly is the insect that lives briefly during the season of spring.
Mayfly is an imitation mayfly used by anglers (people catching fish as a hobby). Anglers go fishing with mayflies for stress relief, too.
