We often do not realise how stressful travel can be for pets if they are not used to it. It is strongly advised to keep your pets into consideration while planning your trip.

Check before hand if your pet will be comfortable while choosing your destination to the mode of transport. “We strongly advise to check if your pet is healthy and is fit to travel.

In case if they are hurt, ill, pregnant or too young to travel; it is suggested not to take your pet along. Pet owners should carry necessary medicines while traveling and vets information around the place they are visiting.

Pet parents also need to make sure that all the necessary vaccination should be done on time before travel to protect the pets against any infection while traveling,” says Dr KG Umesh, Waltham Scientific Communication Manager, Mars India.

Here are few more tips if you want to carry your pooch for vacation this summer.

Thinking of a road trip?

  • Feed them at least a few hours before as few pets go car sick on long trips
  • Consider the use of a crate for travel in the car. It will make them feel that they are in their own space
  • Get a lot of water for them and try to give them space within the car. Taking short breaks is also advisable
  • Fresh air is vital so leave the window down
  • Carry some familiar items like toys, rings with them to make them comfortable

Want to go to camping?

  • Unlike us, pets have sensitive digestive systems. Whole day activity, roasted and fried food, and lack of routine can be very dangerous to pets
  • Keep the first aid kit always ready with you
  • Be aware of the potential hazards like insects, snakes or wild animal as dogs attract a lot to small insects and end up eating them, if not busy in any activity
  • Camping with cats can be tricky as they are not comfortable in leash and they freak out easily but with dogs leash is necessary

Going out of country?

  • Before making your booking make sure the airline does not have any restrictions that will inhibit you from traveling with your pet
  • Give your pet the opportunity to go to the toilet before it is put in its carrying container; let your pet 'try out' the carrying container before the trip
  • The carrying container (Transport Crate) should be well-ventilated, roomy enough for the animal to move around, safe and have adequate food and water for the trip. The crate must be appropriately and clearly labeled with complete name and address, phone number and destination contact information
  • Don’t forget to check the rules and regulations if you are planning to go abroad as each country has different rules
  • Put a familiar-smelling cushion or rug in the container to help your pet settle
  • Look for a pet- friendly vacation resorts which accepts the size of animals you have carried with you and have special programs specifically designed to meet your needs
  • There is something about the holidays that makes people want to pull out the camera and get a great family picture and for families with beloved pets, they want to make sure their four-legged family members are included as well! Undoubtedly vacation with pets can add on to your memories if you are little careful and well prepared.
