May 11 is World Lupus day. As a prelude to the same, KIMS Hospital organised a lupus awareness program, which was graced by Sudan’s Health Minister, Prof Mamoun Mohamed Ali Homeida, Identified with a red butterfly rash on face, lupus can damage the organs of a human body.

If not diagnosed and treated early, it could be fatal. However, the prevalence of the auto-immune disease is rather negligible in India.

Prof Homeida spoke about how his niece succumbed to lupus in the absence of appropriate diagnosis and a dearth of medi-care. ‘KIM’s hospital is really doing a good job and I am impressed with the equipment that has been put in place”.
“Lupus has no permanent cure, but can be treated effectively if it is diagnosed early.

An irony is that unknown to them a vast majority of females suffer from lupus. The common symptoms are diffuse hair loss, recurrent mouth ulcers, butterfly rash on face, excessive skin pigmentation and joint pain with swellings.

It may affect the internal organs like kidneys, brain, lungs, heart and blood,” pointed out Dr Sarath Chandra Mopuli Veerali, Chief Rheumatologist at KIMS.
