The Society for Advancement of Human Endeavour (SAHE) has announced the “Save 10k bores” initiative that aims to recharge 10,000 defunct or dried up bore wells in the city.

Hyderabad has 25 lakh bore wells and more than 10,000 new ones are drilled every year. The city draws half of its water requirement from these sources. And 50 per cent of them are either defunct or dried up,” Viiveck Varma and Ramesh Loganathan, members of SAHE

Addressing a press conference at Hotel NKM’S grand on Friday, expert from team of SAHE Viiveck Verma, said, “This is the most novel idea, which is the need of the hour. This initiative envisions helping recharge the deep aquifers that are being sucked dry through the lakh of deep bore wells dug widely in the city. Upto 2,060 lakes vanished from Hyderabad and the scarcity of water has only increased.”

The idea was conceived in conversation with ‘Smaran’, an NGO working for water and soil conversation at a recently held TEDx Hyderabad salon focusing on civic responsibility. Recently, a discussion took place on the dry bed of Gandipet Lake in which a passionate group of volunteers, water experts and rain water harvesting professionals embarked on a major drive to get 10k bore wells recharge structures built in the summer of 2016.

The idea of SAHE’s project is a simple and easy execution – one plumber, four hours, Rs 15,000 and you can restore a dead or defunct bore well. “The design drawn is proven and many countries have tried this model to charge up borewells,” informed SAHE members. “This model of recharging borewells doesn’t involve any digging, breaking of walls, construction and is very cost effective,” they claimed.
