The US Consulate General in collaboration with Hyderabad Marriott Hotel and Convention Center organised an interactive cooking session for underprivileged students with the celebrated Indian-American chef, Floyd Cardoz on Monday.
Master Chef fame Chef Floyd Cardoz enjoys cooking with underprivileged children, and the Shadab biryani
Chef Cardoz was most recently Executive Chef of North End Grill, a seasonal American restaurant and bar owned by renowned Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group, which he left in April 2014 to pursue personal culinary projects.
During the session he extolled the importance of nutrition for children, and taught them how to make watermelon salad and turai (ridged gourd) dip.
“Watermelon is a seasonal fruit and it is good for health during summer. Watermelon consumed with little tweaks becomes delicious and children will eat it with more enthusiasm.
And most of the kids these days do not like turai and making a dip with it which is tasty helps children to eat it with ease. The dip can be eaten with roti, bread, etc and it is importantly nutritious,” he shared.
The children from Ayusha Nilayam orphanage had a gala time while learning the nitty gritties of making food. Chef Cardoz interacted with the children and he shared his experiences with the kids.
“The session was very informative about the intake of nutritious food. Chef in simple steps taught us how to make salad and dip,” shared John, a Class VII student.
T Senthil Kumar, cultural affairs assistant, US Consulate General Hyderabad, said “We get many experts from the US and make them interact with people in India.
This time, we came to know that Chef Cardoz is coming to India on a personal visit, and so we called him and asked if he would like to visit Hyderabad, and have an interactive session with underprivileged children. He said yes, the moment he heard the cause.”
“Today the chef visited Shraddha Hotel Management College at Moula Ali. There, he interacted with the students and gave them a few tips on career and entrepreneurship. During the afternoon, we conducted this session for children.
As the children are orphans and in near future they have to cook for themselves we are teaching them the importance of nutritious food,” he added.
On the sidelines of the event Chef Cardoz said that he loves Hyderabadi biryani and it is best in the world. “Whenever I visit the city I make sure to eat biryani as much as I can have.
Because, I know that I will not get this chance in a long time. I like Shadab hotel’s biryani very much,” he informed.
