Buoyed by the success of the first experiment that started on March 20 in a small triangular shaped GHMC park at Attapur, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is planning to set up sparrow hole nesting bird conservation zones in some parks in the city in an effort to bring back sparrows into the city.

Rajani Vakkalanka said, “The GHMC Commissioner has been supportive and is open to the idea of increasing the sparrow hole nesting bird conservation zones in other parks of the city.”

According to a study conducted by CALBAC, there are close to 70 parks under GHMC that are small in triangular in shape where there is not much the GHMC can do which are ideal for bird conservation.

Rajini says all parks need not be made glamorous, for sparrows acacia and lantana bushes are very important as they protect them from sparrow hawks and other birds of prey. Rajini is hopeful that the GHMC would take up the project soon.

She says that the nesting zone at Attapur is a major success as nesting is taking place in all the boxes and it goes to show that the model is working.
