Padma Shri V Narasappa, who has been working for the welfare of leprosy affected people in the two Telugu speaking States, has been invited to attend an international symposium at Vatican City on June 10. The symposium organised by Pontifical Council for Health Care Workers and The Nippon Foundation, in co-operation with the Good Samaritan Foundation,

the foundation Raoul Follereau, the Soverign order of Malta and Sasakawa Memorial Health Foundation looks to mainly focus on reducing the disease burden, helping the sick and their families and integrating them into society.

V Narasappa, born in Karnataka was abandoned by his parents once they found out that he was suffering from leprosy was brought up in a home. Rejected by schools and facing discrimination at every step, he however managed to get trained as a medical assistant.

He started Society of Leprosy Affected Persons (SLAP) and involved more than 20,000 people from 90 leprosy colonies. Thanks to his efforts, after filing a petition in 2006 with the assistance from Human Rights Law Network and the Human Rights Network of Lawyers, the High Court passed an interim order for the Government to provide medical services and submit details of the services provided. Further proceedings are in progress.
