Upto tens of thousands of people gathered to bid a final farewell to boxing legend Muhammad Ali in his home city of Louisville in Kentucky on Friday after the heavyweight champion’s death last week.

As the world mourns the loss of one of the most influential sportspersons, Major General NB Patel (retd.), a resident of Trimulgherry in Secunderabad recounts his correspondence with the boxer from 42 years ago.

An avid boxing enthusiast himself, the army veteran, a huge fan of Ali, had written a congratulatory letter to the boxer after he had regained the ‘World Boxing Championship’ in 1974.

Far from being the age of “quick tweets or emails”, it was a pleasant gratification when the champion wrote back to the then Second lieutenant. In addition, Ali sent a pair of complimentary boxing gloves as well to (retd) Maj. Gen. Patel.

As the world bid goodbye to its favourite boxer, these hand-written congratulatory letters from the army veteran and messages of peace and acknowledgement as replies from the boxer are reminders of Muhammad Ali’s humility and what made him a legend – not only in his sport, but as a person overall.
