Speaking at a meeting held in Vijayawada to promote blood donation on the eve of ‘World Blood Donors Day’ former National President of Indian Medical Association (IMA), Dr G Samaram said,

‘‘A person can donate blood as many as 168 times throughout his life span from 18 to 60 years of age. Donating blood for every three months will rejuvenate the body’s cells and enhances its functioning’’.

Addressing the public, the doctor said “the World Health organization has raised slogan as ‘Blood Connects Us All’ and called out for more donors to cater to them in need. There is no alternative to blood and everybody has to realize its importance. Patients at many a time requires blood that has to be injected within the least possible time that plays a vital role in saving lives.”

“Women who gave birth, patients suffering with thalassemia, hemophilia, AIDS, and cancer also require blood along with the injured in accidents. For an average need of 1.2 crore units of blood, only 90 Crore units is available in the country, according to WHO,” he added.

Blood donation has to be made an important part of everybody’s life. It will promote growth of new blood cells in the body and helps save lives, added Dr Samaram.
