By normal estimates it takes at least a decade’s toil by the athlete, coaches and administrators for a young talent to blossom and make a mark in the international arena. However, despite many constraints, the ambitiously launched Central government scheme, ‘Hum Chhuyenge Aasman’ has been a phenomenal success. That in a nutshell was the optimistic note that was sounded by its Project Champion, Vikas Kharadkar on Tuesday.

He was participating in the two-day workshop on ‘Replication of Prime Minister’s Awards for Excellence in Public Administration’ that was conducted in the city jointly by Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG) and Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI).

Vikas, District Sports Officer, Government of Madhya Pradesh, pointed out that when the programme was launched a decade back they were grappling with financial and infrastructural problems. What they did have in abundance was the self-belief that the targets were achievable.

“We started with one academy against a budgetary provision of Rs five crore. Today, in ten years time, Madhya Pradesh boasts of 20 academies, which have financial support to the tune of a whopping Rs 218 crore. That apart, we are providing state-of-the-art technology that are currently used by the likes of football giants like Barcelona and Real Madrid team.

“We cannot expect results in one year. We need at least 10 to 12 years. Ten years back we were placed 16 in the National Games but in Kerala we finished sixth in the standings. We will become number one in the next few years.

Six women hockey players in the Rio-bound national team are from the State,” he said to huge applause.
Pointing out that it was a good augury that some talents are being employed by the private sector, he said, ‘we are investing heavily in hiring quality and qualified coaches, including Ashok Kumar (hockey) and Pullela Gopichand (badminton)’.

Jitender Yadav, Director, Sports, Chandigarh and Jitin of Assam also spoke on the occasion.
