The repair works for the Old Culvert Bridge, near Philips Godown at Bowenpally, are going at a snail pace and it may take another six months to be ready for use.

Owing to the ongoing works, the shopkeepers on either side of the bridge numbering over 60 are experiencing heavy loss of business, due to road closure between Bapujunagar and Central Point road.

Sateesh, owner of shoe mart adjacent to the bridge, said, “The entire stock brought for sale during the Ramdan festival could not be sold, in spite of displaying clearance sale at “cost to price" and undergoing heavy losses for the past three months. There are many similar cases like me in the entire stretch.”

Some shopkeepers, on condition of anonymity, said some of our structures adjacent to the bridge were demolished for road cutting. “Customers are scared to come to our shops, due to road closure, bad smell.

Added to the woes, many people who are attempting to cross the broken bridge on small pipe line are meeting with accidents and are falling down in the dirt and left with severe hurts,” they informed.

The Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) began the works at a cost of Rs one crore and five lakhs and the bridge was supposed to be completed by July 18.

K Pandu Yadav, ward member 6 of the SCB, while talking to The Hans India, said, “This bridge was constructed with stones during the Nizam’s rule and was only 25 ft and it is in a dilapidated condition and ready to collapse any moment.

However, SCB authorities accorded sanction for construction of new bridge 50 ft wide to facilitate hassle free moment of traffic on this busy road, which will lead to Medchal Highway and other important roads of Balanagar and Mumbai Highway.

“The excavation works, such as underground cable lines BSNL lines, HMWS&SB, drinking water pipelines, electric pole relocation works are in progress by the respective departments.

Once it is completed, the construction of the bridge will begin and it is likely to be completed by end of this year,” added Yadav.
