Dr VM Tiwari, previously Director of National Centre for Earth System Studies (NCESS), Thiruvananthapuram, has taken over charge as Director of the CSIR-National Geophysical Research Institute (CSIR-NGRI), Hyderabad on July 11.

Dr VM Tiwari, previously Director of National Centre for Earth System Studies (NCESS), Thiruvananthapuram, has taken over charge as Director of the CSIR-National Geophysical Research Institute (CSIR-NGRI), Hyderabad on July 11.

Dr Tiwari obtained his post-graduate degree in Geophysics from Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi. He began his scientific career at CSIR-NGRI, after receiving a PhD in Geophysics from NGRI and BHU.

His research interests primarily focus on deciphering subsurface mass distribution and mass transport relevant to a wide range of scientific and societal applications such as elucidating structure and dynamics of different geological settings in the Indian lithosphere, variation in water storage over Indian subcontinent and mapping of sub-basaltic sediments.

Besides well-cited research papers in leading journals, he has also contributed significantly to the projects of Oil and Mineral Industries. He is a recipient of National Merit Scholarship; ONGC-AEG Best Thesis Award; Young Scientist Awards from Indian National Science Academy (INSA), Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Department of Science & Technology,

Govt. of Uttar Pradesh, Krishnan Gold Medal by Indian Geophysical Union (IGU), National Mineral Award by Ministry of Mines, Govt. of India and Fellowship of National Academy of Sciences (FNASc.), India. He is also member of several national and international committees.
