Noted telecom experts and doctors came together to measure Electromagnetic Frequency (EMF) emissions from mobile towers in the city on Thursday. In a pleasant revelation, the joint inspection team found that mobile towers in Hyderabad were transmitting well within permissible limits and, in fact, in some cases much lower than the prescribed limits in India.
A team of experts led by officials from the Department of Telecommunications (Ministry of Communications) tested telecom tower sites in SR Nagar, Kukatpally and Film Nagar and revealed the results.
The level of emission near BK Guda Park, SR Nagar Area was 0.8 milliwatts psqm. The next location tested was a tower in Vivekananda Colony, Kukatpally. The reading was 0.646 milliwattspsqm. The third site tested was at Road No. 9, Film Nagar where the level was measured at 1.664 milliwattspsqm.
These findings are well below the prescribed norms set by the DoT at 450 milliwatts per square metre (mw/m2) G GouriSankar, DDG TERM, Hyderabad, Department of Telecommunications, Government of India said,
“We forget that seamless mobile connectivity is an important factor, which can help a state to grow. Having said that, lack of sufficient towers is hampering network quality in Hyderabad.
A majority of cell tower sites are shut down due to the fear of EMF radiation and their impact on health despite no scientific proofs. According to the experts, more mobile towers are required in order to boost the connectivity and enhance network in the area.”
“There are totally 7,728 towers out of which 2,233 mobile towers were tested. According to the norms we keep on testing the telecom towers for every month.” He added.
He assured people that they have come up with a minimal amount of radiation levels so far which is not effective from the health point of view.
“In addition to this, the Government is simultaneously partaking in all the research and discussions of credible organisational bodies and committees like Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR),
World Health Organisation (WHO) and Department of Science and Technology (DST) to revise the guidelines related to the tower installation and fund investment and update them with recent discoveries and guidelines,” he said.
Location | Radiation Level | Prescribed Limit | Actual Reading as % age of Prescribed Limit |
BK Guda, SR Nagar Area | 0.8 milliwattspsqm | 450 milliwattspsqm | 0.17% |
Vivekananda Colony, Kukatpally | 0.646 milliwattspsqm | 450 milliwattspsqm | 0.14% |
Road No 9, Film Nagar | 1.664 milliwattspsqm | 450 milliwattspsqm | 0.37% |
