A historic well dating back to over 150 years, which was in use till 2003, has been revived. The South Central Railway (SCR) general manager Ravindra Gupta, soon after inaugurating the newly revived well on Monday said, “The well was in use right from the time of Sir Mir Turab Ali Khan, Salar Jung-I (1829-1883) for recreation but after independence, once SCR was formed in 1966, the well served the railways.”

The Nizams used to swim in the well and after Indian independence and the abolition of the privy purses and consequent developments in the railways; the water body came into use for watering steam engines at the steam loco shed at Moula Ali. Once the Electrical Car Shed (ECS) came into existence and with the fading away of steam engines, the well went into disuse.

The revival of the heritage well, adjacent to the Railway Protection Force Training Centre at Moula-Ali is to cater to the water supply requirements of railway colony, diesel loco shed and electric loco shed and is expected to yield two lakh litres of water every day and generate a saving of Rs 1 crore per annum.

The SCR also planted saplings at the location. Ravindra Gupta said that another old well at Alugaddabavi would be revived soon. Shikha Gupta, president, South Central Railway Women’s Welfare Organisation, Aruna Singh, divisional railway manager, Hyderabad division, S N Singh, principal chief engineer and other senior officials and representatives of trade unions were amongst those present during the inauguration.
